Metal Options
I prefer to use wire that does not tarnish. This is because I love to use color in my designs, in the form of either colored wire or colored resin. Unfortunately, colored wire can be damaged when trying to shine up a tarnished metal. And when working with resin it will look odd when the same wire has differing amounts of tarnish due to areas being coated in resin.
Parawire
Parawire has the most durable coating on the market and will withstand plenty of general wear. The base wire is 99% pure copper and may be plated with a layer of fine silver (depending on color), over which a tinted, flexible, baked-on coating is applied to both give the wire its color and to keep it from tarnishing Please keep in mind that extended periods of direct sunlight and/or water/humidity exposure may weaken the coating and/or cause it to become faded/discolored. Be gentle and kind to your wire and it will stay beautiful for many years to come. Sadly, the silver parawire can look more cloudy and dull than other metal options.
Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel is a hypoallergenic option that is tarnish resistant, and is very durable and long lasting. It's low maintenance and suitable for daily wear. It is often seen as a more ethical choice compared to mined precious metals. Unfortunately the natural color of stainless steel is quite a bit darker than silver which can make it not as attractive when paired with some colors. It can also be really hard to work with when it comes to bending the wire (due to its strength), and that is why some stainless steel options have an upcharge.
Iron
Iron Is another metal known for its strength and durability. Unlike Stainless steel, It is quite light in color allowing it to pair beautifully with any color, including the really light colors. If you have a metal sensitivity however, this may not be the best option for you. It should also be kept away from water/humidity as it can rust.
Sterling Silver
This one will Patina (or tarnish) over time, so I only use it on pieces that do not contain colored wire, or resin. Sterling silver is also known as 925 silver. It balances durability and shine, is ideal for everyday wear, and can look good for a lifetime. Sterling silver is a precious metal and as such is more expensive to buy than other options. To remove tarnish there are many types of polishing cloths or solutions that you can buy, as well as a few diy options that don't involve buying anything new.
